Julia Bracegirdle - "An Impossible Course"
29/03/2016
By thinking that we can do it all do we set up unrealistic expectations that ultimately limit what we do?
“ He must have knowledge of architecture of all periods and nationalities. He must be able to visualize and make interesting a tenement or a prison. He must be a cartoonist, a costumier, a marine painter, a designer of ships, an interior decorator, a landscape painter, a dramatist, an inventor, a historical and, now, an acoustical expert.” William Cameron Menzies (speaking about the attributes of a live action Art Director/Production Designer) Harvard, 1929
Cameron Menzies’ range of accomplishments is all too familiar to animation practitioners. But as teachers and students of animation our lists extend even further - to story, screenwriting, performance, technological know how, film and ever expanding transmedia outputs, and more. Is it actually possible to teach and learn all this ? By thinking that we can do it all do we set up unrealistic expectations that ultimately limit what we do ?
